New Zealand is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit your needs. Accommodation is available in abundance at the major tourist locations, but also scattered around off-the-beaten-track places - wherever you go, accommodation is never too far away. One thing to note about accommodation in Reefton is that you should be sure to book early for peak holiday times, for instance over the Christmas holidays and long weekends. During these times accommodation is often booked out well in advance.
Reefton is situated in the heart of the Victoria Conservation Park.
The town has preserved much of the character and charm of its historic past. In 1888, Reefton turned on electric street lighting before any other town in the southern hemisphere.
Below the mist and hidden in the bush are the old mine relics that were once the bread and butter of the town they surrounded.
Today Reefton cherishes its goldfields history. A maze of tracks once used by the mine workers are still being maintained and explored by visiting bikers, trampers and 4WDs.
Tracks can guide you around a day's loop or can lead you to modern Department of Conservation overnight huts. Up hills, through bush-clad valleys, creeks and over swing bridges, these tracks were the lifelines of the town.
Take a breather with the bush robins on the way, and keep an ear out for the warblers, tui and bellbirds, kaka and kakariki.
Don't leave Reefton without discovering the Visitor Centre. You can step back into the past in their gold mine tunnel. Their new displays of Reefton's heritage and surrounding Victoria Forest Park are a must.
A hotel, self-catering motels and lodge, bed & breakfast and a motor camp give you a good selection from which to choose your accommodation. Pet friendly accommodation may be available by arrangement.
