Riverton has a scenic harbour estuary, fishing boats and cosy bathing beaches giving panoramic views
amid the ambience of the sea. As well as being Southland's most popular beach resort, Riverton is
one of the South Island's oldest towns dating back to the whaling days of 1836. Glimpses of
Riverton's past can be seen in the local museum. Activities include boating, duck shooting, fishing,
bush walking and jet boating in the Pourakino Valley. Attractions include Observation Point, the
Howell Memorial, and a paua shell factory. Safe swimming beaches are at Taramea, Mitchell's and
Henderson's Bays (9 km). There are many scenic bush and coastal walks in or near Riverton providing
superb views of the distant Bluff Hill, Stewart Island and its adjacent Muttonbird Islands, Centre
Island and Foveaux Strait.
