Town Info

Rotorua Motels (Self-Contained) - Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Rotorua Motels (Self-Contained) including Cottages, Motel and Motor Lodge, you will find it here on AA Travel.

Motel accommodation is great for independent travellers. If you like to have the option of cooking your own meals, doing your own laundry and having the essential comforts of a home while staying in Rotorua, motels are the best form of accommodation. There is a huge variety of motels all around the country, from the top of the North Island to Stewart Island, and a range of prices to suit most budgets. You'll find motels in main cities, along main travelling routes and near popular tourist attractions, as well as in off-the-beaten-track scenic locations. Most motel units have self-catering facilities with fully equipped kitchens. They also have a phone, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a private bathroom. They have made-up beds with all bedding supplied, and car parking. Breakfast (at an additional cost) can usually be ordered the previous night for delivery to the unit if required.

The city of Rotorua can be a relaxing destination, with world-class thermal spa facilities, tranquil lakes, renowned golf courses and spectacular scenery to explore. But if it's thrills and action you're after, you've come to the right place. Whether it's rafting, jet-boating, off-roading, luging, soaring through the sky in a giant swing, tumbling downhill in a plastic bubble called a Zorb, or blazing through the forest on a mountain bike, Rotorua certainly knows how to give you an adrenalin rush.

The kids will definitely love Rotorua too. Exotic wildlife, animal encounters, horse riding, hot pools, fun tours, cool rides and lots more are guaranteed to create a fun family trip!

Combine all of this with Rotorua's wondrous geothermal landscape, cultural experiences and historical sites to explore, and you have one great location for a fun-filled holiday. With so much to see and do, it's little wonder that Rotorua is consistently one of the most visited tourist destinations in New Zealand.

How thermal activity came to Rotorua

Maori believe that Rotorua owes its thermal attractions to an early spiritual leader from the Te Arawa tribe, Ngatoroirangi. In Maori mythology, when the great waka (canoe) Te Arawa arrived in Rotorua, Ngatoroirangi had to stand on the summit of what is now Mt Tongariro in order to claim the surrounding land for his tribe.

As he reached the top of the mountain, he almost died from the icy wind and the cold. To save himself from the cold, he sent a prayer to his sisters in Hawaiki (where, according to Maori folklore, the Maori people originated).

They responded, sending fire demons to his aid. These demons cut across the ocean, surfacing at White Island, Rotorua and Taupo before reaching Ngatoroirangi and freeing him from the lethal cold, leaving a geothermal trail where they had travelled and giving these places the thermal activity that can still be seen today.

Rotorua has a thriving cultural community whose art and crafts reflect the vibrancy and spirit of the people. These are practised here in the form of wood, greenstone and bone carvings, weaving and ta moko (tattooing). These art forms have been practised here for around 800 years, and we all know that practice makes perfect! Pick up something ready-made at a souvenir shop, or see it being created at a Maori village.

There is an amazing selection of accommodation in Rotorua: luxury lodges, suites, apartments, self-catering motels and motor inns, bed & breakfasts, backpackers, and holiday parks offering budget accommodation, campervan and campsites. Seasonal discounts may apply and pet-friendly accommodation is available in Rotorua by arrangement. Some holiday parks also sell fishing licences.
