Springfield sits at the gateway to the alps and plains. Having five ski fields within close reach has brought increasing popularity and Springfield's eateries are renowned for their cuisine.

Looking east you'll see the patchwork quilt that makes up the Canterbury plains, while west are the majestic, snow-capped Southern Alps. It's no wonder this idyllic little township is known as the Gateway to the Alps.

Set at the base of the Torlesse Range, Springfield is the last stop for the TranzAlpine railway as it heads west towards Greymouth. If you're a train aficionado, you'll love this journey that travels through some of the most beautiful countryside and mountains in the world before descending to the wild West Coast.

The Torlesse Range is known for its numerous outdoor activities that attract many city-dwellers and overseas visitors. You can hunt, cross-country ski during winter and go tramping. Trampers are advised to check weather conditions before heading out due to the sudden changes in climate that can occur. You should also advise somebody where you are going and when you are expected back.

If you're a ski enthusiast, then Springfield is a must because there are five ski fields within its immediate vicinity, as well as one of the biggest skiing destinations in the country, Mt Hutt, only 70km to the south.
