Taking advantage of
Tararua/Manawatu/Rangitikei Region's backpacker options is a great way to socialise
before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker
accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where,
usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people
of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything
this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand
backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high
quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a
mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double
rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities
usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated
laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars
and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to
stay awhile.
The prosperous farming regions of Rangitikei, Manawatu and Tararua produce milk, horticultural
products and sheep. Coastal beaches offer good fishing, but swimming outside the patrolled areas is
dangerous. Rangitikei incorporates some of the Ruahine Ranges, and takes in the entire length of the
Rangitikei River, as well as the towns of Taihape, Hunterville, Marton and Bulls. There is a
delightful mix of rural life and big city sophistication in the Manawatu, where the landscape sweeps
from the high country Ruahine and Tararua Ranges to the coastal plains and beaches of Tangimoana and
Himatangi. Tararua is bounded by both the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges, and includes the
Scandinavian-inspired towns of Dannevirke and Norsewood, as well as Pahiatua and Woodville. The
Tararua Wind Farm at Ballance is well worth a visit for the glorious views. There are many
accommodation options in the region, covering luxury to budget; hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts,
holiday parks and backpacker accommodation.
