Taumarunui lies at the confluence of the Ongarue and Whanganui Rivers used for recreational canoeing
and jet boating. 'The Heart of the King Country', it serves a large farming district. Activities
include hunting, horse riding, trout fishing, bush walks, Maori marae, arts and crafts, and Heritage
Trail (SH 43) to Stratford. There are several small private museums. It is possible to hire canoes
and take a trip or a 1-5 day journey stopping at campsites along the way.
