Town Info

Temuka Accommodation. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Temuka Accommodation including Hotels, Motels (Self-Contained), Bed and Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Backpackers and Apartments, you will find it here on AA Travel.

New Zealand is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit your needs. Accommodation is available in abundance at the major tourist locations, but also scattered around off-the-beaten-track places - wherever you go, accommodation is never too far away. One thing to note about accommodation in Temuka is that you should be sure to book early for peak holiday times, for instance over the Christmas holidays and long weekends. During these times accommodation is often booked out well in advance.

Most New Zealanders will be familiar with Temuka, not necessarily because they've been here, but because of the New Zealand-famous Temuka Homeware. An extensive range of this town's major export - distinctive oven to table pottery - is on sale at the centrally located showroom. You're bound to pick up a bargain, and if you're interested in how it all comes together, you can arrange a tour of the factory.

Temuka is also a popular family holiday spot, especially in the summer when holidaymakers utilise the excellent camping facilities at the picturesque Temuka Domain and the bowling green, swimming pool and tennis courts come to life. Thanks to the foresight of Temuka's forebears, the Domain is a tranquil haven with its extensive collection of trees.

The several rivers in the area are renowned for their plentiful trout, salmon and whitebait, and there are lots of places where you can find your own secluded swimming hole, or the perfect spot for a picnic.

Temuka is also notable for some considerable controversy surrounding an aviation first. Head inland towards the foothills of the Southern Alps and you will reach Waitohi where there is a monument to aviator and inventor Richard Pearse.

In March 1903 Pearse achieved about 140 metres of flight in his monoplane before crashing into a gorse hedge on his Waitohi property. There is uncertainty about whether this constituted sustained flight, but some people argue that Pearse beat the Wright Brothers to the first powered flight.

The monument at Waitohi is a replica of Pearse's plane and stands beside the paddock where he landed. Study the replica and see if you can decide if this local boy was unfairly deprived of a remarkable world-first.

There is an abundance of accommodation in Temuka; choose from self-catering motels and a holiday park with budget accommodation, campervan and campsites.
