i-SITES are New Zealand’s official visitor centres, and there are over 80 of them throughout the country. Aside from i-SITES, there are also information centres in most towns and even in small settlements.
The friendly staff at the information centres can help you find accommodation, plan tours and activities, and give you that local insight that makes all the difference. Most bookings can be made here for you, and you can pick up maps and brochures to help you plan your visit. These centres also sometimes have souvenirs for sale and internet access.
Thames: Thames is the largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula and is filled with gold-mining history. At the height of the gold boom in the 1880s, it was larger in population than Auckland, and a number of buildings survive from that era. Nearby Kauaeranga Valley offers extensive walking tracks. Activities include visiting a tropical butterfly and orchid garden, scenic flights, canyoning, gold mine and soap factory tours, golf, tennis, bowls, croquet, fishing and swimming. Local art, crafts and pottery abound, and there are some excellent dining spots. Thames runs a market in the main street every Saturday morning.
