Thames is the largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula and is filled with gold-mining history. At
the height of the gold boom in the 1880s, it was larger in population than Auckland, and a number of
buildings survive from that era. Nearby Kauaeranga Valley offers extensive walking tracks.
Activities include visiting a tropical butterfly and orchid garden, scenic flights, canyoning, gold
mine and soap factory tours, golf, tennis, bowls, croquet, fishing and swimming. Local art, crafts
and pottery abound, and there are some excellent dining spots. Thames runs a market in the main
street every Saturday morning.
