Town Info

Timaru Accommodation New Zealand - AA Travel Guide. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Timaru Accommodation including Hotels, Motels (Self-Contained), Bed and Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Backpackers and Apartments, you will find it here on AA Travel.

New Zealand is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit your needs. Accommodation is available in abundance at the major tourist locations, but also scattered around off-the-beaten-track places - wherever you go, accommodation is never too far away. One thing to note about accommodation in Timaru is that you should be sure to book early for peak holiday times, for instance over the Christmas holidays and long weekends. During these times accommodation is often booked out well in advance.

Timaru is the largest urban area in South Canterbury and is based around its busy port and the dairy industry.

The city's most popular holiday spot is Caroline Bay, one of New Zealand's safest swimming beaches and there are plenty of other diversions including a maze, mini golf, children's paddling pool and playground.

In the town centre you'll find a welcoming landscape with stunning flowers, trees and paved areas. Now that the South Island's main highway no longer flows through its main street, this city has a real central focus.

Park yourself on one of the town's seats and appreciate some fine examples of Edwardian architecture, then take in the city's idyllic location between the ocean and Alps. The striking piazza has views that stretch from Caroline Bay to the snow-clad mountains, an outlook the numerous cafes, bars and restaurants have taken full advantage of.

Timaru has many scenic walks, including the Botanic Gardens, or take a stroll around the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden at Caroline Bay. Recreational facilities cater for tennis, golf, bowls, yachting and swimming.

If it's culture you're interested in, you'll find works by Goldie, McCahon and Hodgkins amongst the rich collection at the Aigantighe Art Gallery as well as an international sculpture garden. The Gallery embraces unusual and innovative art and holds regular exhibitions ranging from regional artists to international works.

A fascinating collection of artefacts from around the region is on show at the South Canterbury Museum. There's plenty of focus on Maori history, European settlement and local geology from displays to audio-visual presentations. The museum also houses a full-size replica of the aeroplane flown by local aviator Richard Pearse in 1903. Some people believe he was the first person to make a powered flight - some nine months before the Wright Brothers!

Go back in time at the southern hemisphere's last remaining Landing Service Building, now the information centre.

The restaurants and cafes that link the beach to Timaru's main shopping area provide a bright, vibrant social scene. As you would expect of Canterbury's second largest city, there is plentiful accommodation covering a wide variety.

Hotels, self-catering motor lodges and motels, and holiday parks with motels, budget accommodation, campervan and campsites. Pet friendly accommodation is available by arrangement.
