Turangi: Once a small fishing town, Turangi serves the local forestry, farming and visitor industries. The visitor centre has an audiovisual display of the hydroelectric power scheme. The Tongariro River is one of the most famous trout fishing rivers in the world. The Department of Conservation runs the Tongariro National Trout Centre 5km to the south of Turangi, with a viewing chamber and picnic and barbecue areas. It is possible to take a 2-hour scenic cruise to experience the stunning scenery and birdlife southern Lake Taupo has to offer. Nearby Kaimanawa Forest Park offers hunting, and tramping, and Lake Rotopounamu (Greenstone Lake) is known for its bush, beach and birds.
