New Zealand is fortunate enough to have a wide variety of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever standard you seek, there is a price and quality to suit your needs. Accommodation is available in abundance at the major tourist locations, but also scattered around off-the-beaten-track places - wherever you go, accommodation is never too far away. One thing to note about accommodation in Twizel is that you should be sure to book early for peak holiday times, for instance over the Christmas holidays and long weekends. During these times accommodation is often booked out well in advance.
If all had gone according to plan, Twizel wouldn't exist today.
This township was built in 1968 as the base for the Upper Waitaki Power Development, one of the most impressive hydro-electric power schemes in the southern hemisphere. The plan was to bulldoze the town once the construction work was completed, but having grown fond of Twizel during the 18 years of construction work, its inhabitants successfully campaigned to retain the town.
Twizel lived on in its role as a service centre for the surrounding area and has expanded its tourist role.
If you're an adventurer, Twizel is the nearest town to Aoraki/Mount Cook, but if you're not prepared to tackle New Zealand's highest mountain by foot, hop aboard a scenic flight or take in the mountain's majesty from ground level.
Choose your accommodation from a selection covering inns, self-catering motels, backpacker lodges and holiday parks with budget accommodation, campervan and campsites. Pet friendly accommodation may be available by arrangement.
