Taking advantage of
Waikato Region's backpacker options is a great way to socialise
before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker
accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where,
usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people
of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything
this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand
backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high
quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a
mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double
rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities
usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated
laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars
and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to
stay awhile.
The name 'Waikato' comes from Maori and translates as 'flowing water'. The beautiful Waikato River
runs from Lake Taupo to Port Waikato, a distance of 425km, making it the longest river in New
Zealand. It carves its journey through the landscape, and intersects the region's major city,
Hamilton, a city of education and scientific research, parks and gardens, fine cuisine and cafes,
culture and attractions. Centrally located to Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua, this region is ideal
as a base for touring in the North Island. The Waikato region has some of the most productive land
in New Zealand, and contains almost 80 percent of New Zealand's geothermal systems. You will have a
wide range of accommodation to choose from in this region; luxury hotels, motels, motor inns,
holiday parks for campervans and campsites, and backpacker youth hostels.
