Waipu was settled in 1853 by a group of Scottish highlanders and much of the area's history is preserved in the Waipu Museum. Highland Games are held every New Year's Day. The Waipu Caves, complete with limestone formations and glow-worms, can be accessed via a walkway through bush and farmland. Accommodation options include a self-catering apartment and bed & breakfast. Waipu also has a self-catering motel with a restaurant open during the summer months.
