Waitangi is among one of the earliest sites of permanent European settlement in New Zealand. The
Waitangi Treaty grounds are the location of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the Maori
Chiefs and the British Crown in 1840. Tourist attractions include the largest Maori war canoes
(waka) in the world, the historic Treaty House, a carved Maori meeting house, audiovisual displays,
guided tours and cultural experiences. Commemorations are held at Waitangi to mark the Treaty of
Waitangi every 6 February (Waitangi Day). Nearby, Mount Bledisloe offers unparalleled views of the
Bay of Islands. The beautiful park-like grounds are also home to a cafe, hotel and 18-hole golf
course.
