Town Info

Waitomo Caves Activities - What to See & Do. If you are looking for comprehensive travel information for Waitomo Caves Activities including Activity with Accommodation, Adventure, Caving, Cultural Display, Eco Tourism, Eco-Tour, Family Activity, Farm Tour, Fun Park, Historic, Horse Riding, Jet Boating/Jet Skiing, Museum, Off Roading/4WD, Other Activities, Rafting and Black Water Rafting, Rock Climbing, Theme Park, Trekking, Walking Tour, Wildlife Tours and Zoo, you will find it here on AA Travel.

If you come to Waitomo Caves looking for fun, excitement or a dose of adrenalin, you certainly won't leave disappointed. There's bound to be aquatic, family or thrilling activities either here or not too far away, from marine mammal encounters and eco-tourism adventures to cruises and jet-boat rides. New Zealand is the 'Adventure Capital of the World', so adrenalin-pumping action is found all over the country. Jet boating and white-water rafting are exhilarating ways to check out the country's crystal-clear rivers and magic scenery. If you would rather stay dry then there's a myriad of land and air-based activities on offer too. The brave can try bungy jumping, the slightly less courageous can enjoy a tandem hang-glide or parapent, or for the ultimate thrill there is the free-fall skydive. Plus, abseiling or exploring the captivating cave systems that riddle both the North and South Islands should definitely be on your to-do list.

Spectacular sculpted limestone outcrops, 'disappearing' streams and natural bridges give tourists
several clues that Waitomo is different. It has two landscapes - one above ground and one below.
Take a boat ride through a glow-worm cave, or go adventure caving and cave abseiling (rappelling) or
float along under a 'sky' of glow-worms through huge caverns scattered with ancient stalactites.
Jump on a 4WD trail bike, go skydiving, horse trekking, jet boating, take in a kiwi-culture show,
rabbit shearing, wildlife park, forest and farm walk, or go on a Maori scenic cultural tour. Explore
the three-hour Waitomo Walkway starting opposite the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre and Museum of
Caves and experience Waitomo's beautiful rolling farmland, native forest and spectacular limestone
features, including the Ruakuri Natural Bridge; and, at night see the magnificent glow-worm display
near Ruakuri car park (free maps available from the i-SITE). Take a 30-minute drive west to the
Mangapohue Natural Bridge, self-guided Piripiri Caves and the Marokopa Falls; and, take a further 20
minutes to Marokopa and the wild and beautiful west coast. From Marokopa, take a two-hour scenic
drive south to Awakino and on to New Plymouth, or return north to Te Kuiti and Hamilton.
