Waitomo means the place where wai (water) disappears into a tomo (hole in the ground). Several of
the limestone caves are used for adventure activities such as black-water rafting and abseiling.
Near the picturesaque village of Waitomo there is a walkway, the Ruakuri Bushwalk, which passes
through three short caves that feature unusual limestone formations. West of Waitomo is Marokopa,
and the picturesque west coast.
