Taking advantage of
Wanganui's backpacker options is a great way to socialise
before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker
accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where,
usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people
of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything
this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand
backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high
quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a
mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double
rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities
usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated
laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars
and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to
stay awhile.
Wanganui is located close to the mouth of the Whanganui River. During the early days of European
settlement, Wanganui was an important trading town. Prominent heritage buildings in the city include
the Royal Wanganui Opera House and the Sarjeant Art Gallery. Much of the city is on the river's
north-west bank. Close to the south-east end of the City Bridge is one of Wanganui's more unusual
features - an elevator tunnel leading to a monument on the top of Durie Hill. Accommodation options
in Wanganui includes luxury motor inns and hotels, self-catering motels, holiday parks, campervan
and campsites, and lodges for backpackers and groups. There is also a gymnasium catering for large
groups with meals by arrangement. Pet friendly accommodation is available by arrangement. Group,
senior citizen and seasonal discounts may be available at some establishments.
