The Whanganui River winds its way from the mountains to the Tasman Sea through the countless hills
and valleys of Whanganui National Park. The area has a unique history, with Maori culture being an
important part of the park experience. A large tract of lowland broadleaf/podocarp forest covers the
complex landscape, with many native tree species still in abundance. Erosion has created spectacular
gorges, sharp ridges, sheer papa cliffs and waterfalls. Many native bird species are seen and heard
and the call of the brown kiwi can often be heard at night. Today this remote river provides a
wilderness haven for unique outdoor adventure. In very few places in the world can you be totally
cut off from the pressures of civilization for several days. Tramping tracks through wild lowland
forests and river trips down the mighty Whanganui are popular activities. Choose from short or
longer adventures, and from canoe or kayak to jet boat and launch tours. People of all ages and
fitness levels can experience the Whanganui Journey.
