Taking advantage of
Whangarei's backpacker options is a great way to socialise
before moving on and exploring the entire country on a budget. Backpacker
accommodation is friendly, communal and reliable. They are places where,
usually, young travellers congregate and often make friends with people
of different nationalities. It's the most fun way to discover everything
this country has to offer and meet like-minded travellers. New Zealand
backpacker accommodation is considered to be of a consistently high
quality. Most backpacker accommodation throughout the country offers a
mixture of shared rooms (dormitories), as well as single, twin or double
rooms for a higher (but still relatively cheap) cost. The facilities
usually consist of a communal kitchen and bathroom, and a coin-operated
laundry, although this does vary - many also have internet access, bars
and TV lounges. Long-term rates are usually offered for those planning to
stay awhile.
Northland's only city - an excellent place to stock up if you are heading for a beach house or
camping ground. In the inner Whangarei city area you will find great cafes and plenty of shops.
Quayside at the Town Basin is the place to go for restaurants, art shops and interesting museums.
Whangarei Falls, 5km NE of the city, is known as the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand. AH
Reed Memorial Park is a native forest reserve with many large kauri trees - some more than 500 years
old. Stroll along the treetop boardwalk. Accommodation ranges from hotels to luxury lodges;
self-catering motels to holiday parks and campsites; bed & breakfast and farm stay to backpacker
hostel. Groups are welcome, seasonal rates and discounts may apply. Pet friendly accommodation is
available by arrangement.
