There is a huge variety of motels all around the country, from the top of the North Island to Stewart Island, and a range of prices to suit most budgets. Only 20 minutes north of Christchurch, the delightful rural town of Woodend is surrounded by lush farmland and lifestyle blocks.
For some, the township is seen as a good place for a pit stop when heading north from Christchurch, but Woodend is also a popular summertime destination for holidaymakers who like to head to Woodend Beach and the other beaches in Pegasus Bay.
The town is located between the shingle beds of the Ashley and Waimakariri Rivers and offers excellent recreational opportunities including fishing, swimming, surfing, walking and horse riding.
Woodend is also a destination for arts and crafts; on the main road next to the Old Fire Station is a store that has crafts from over 170 suppliers. On the same road you can sample naturally made liqueurs and infused olive oils at Prenzels of Canterbury, and when you're travelling in the area, keep an eye out for roadside stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables.
The excellent Pegasus Bay Walkway travels along the beach, onto sand dunes and through pine plantations and can be accessed from Woodend Beach, Waikuku or Pines Beach. Day trips from Woodend include Arthur's Pass, Aoraki/Mount Hutt, Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs. The turn-off for the historic Kaiapoi Pa is between Woodend and Waikuku.
