Not only will you be preserving fond memories to look back on, you'll discover that taking photos is actually really fun. I've put together a few tips to help you get started taking amazing photos, so get out there and let your inner photographer loose on New Zealand's picture-perfect landscapes.

Firstly, remember to take your camera with you everywhere that you go - you just never know when that perfect Kodak moment may pop up!

Photograph anything and everything that takes your fancy, and mix it up a bit. Sometimes the things that don't look very exciting at first make the best photos. Just remember to be respectful of other people and property, and any cultural limitations.

Start by using the automatic setting on your camera (if it has one), and focus on taking photos with good positioning and angles. Then as you become more confident, start to play with the exposure and scene selection until you are in complete control of your photos.

Light is one of the most important elements of a great photo - it affects how everything in your photo appears and can change the perception of the image. Try moving either yourself or your subject, if you can, to change the lighting in your photo.

Be aware of what's in your background. If you are trying to focus on a person, have a simple, plain background. Also note that some unnoticed things such as rubbish bins, a truck driving past or a person entering the background can ruin a great photo.

Have fun with angles. Most photos are taken at eye-level, so try something different by taking high or low-angle shots.

Play with the positioning of your subject. They don't need to be centred in the middle of the shot, in fact images often look better with the subject to one side. Give it a go and find out for yourself.

Remember, at the end of the day, if you look at your photos and remember the fun times and great adventures that go with them, they are a success. Happy snapping!
