There's only four days to go until the most romantic day of the year! Don't worry if you haven't planned anything yet, you still have time... just! Go on, organise something special – after all, they're worth it, aren't they? I'll help you by giving you some suggestions that I just know your other half will love, and they don't have to break the bank.
For those of you on a budget, don't despair. Romance doesn't necessarily equal expensive, all you need is some imagination. Kai Iwi Lakes, just a three-hour drive north of Auckland, certainly deserves the 'caters to all budgets' tag. Book a campsite and your accommodation is sorted.
Show you've put some thought into the occasion by preparing a picnic lunch, which can be enjoyed at one of the three lakes in the area; Kai Iwi, Taharoa or Waikere. Following that, a walk around the lakes, trout fishing, swimming, kayaking or simply relaxing are just some options. Dargaville, 34km south of Kai Iwi Lakes, has several dining options for a romantic dinner for two.
Start the following morning by heading south to Baylys Beach. This long beach is great for coastal walks, quad biking, golf, swimming and horse trekking. Without the hip pocket taking a battering, this is sure to be a weekend to remember.
If you're keen to make a good impression and show you're a 'keeper', while at the same time keeping a watchful eye on the credit card statements, this one's for you. Enter Wellington - the ideal base for a romantic break. Visit Lambton Quarter in the city or Jackson St, Petone in nearby Hutt Valley for a spot of shopping. Then, take a short ferry ride from Hutt Valley to Eastbourne, which is a relaxed spot for lunch or a quiet afternoon drink. For dinner, head to a restaurant on Oriental Parade and watch the sun set as you take in the gorgeous views.
After a fantastic day it's important to keep the momentum going and that's where a tour of Martinborough's wineries comes in. Keeping in mind the need to avoid drink drinking, an hour-long train trip to this Wairarapa destination is the perfect solution and a sure way to finish the weekend in style.
If you want to spare no expense in making this a Valentine's Day to remember, you'll find no shortage of impressive, romantic things to do in Christchurch. Take a punting journey along the beautiful Avon River and lay back with your sweetheart on velvet cushions – then surprise them with a bottle of exquisite champagne and nibbles.
Following a spot of pre-dinner pampering (think massages and spas), wow them with a dinner fit for a king. Find a secluded, fine-dining restaurant with candlelight, an incredible view and a dance floor for a romantic, post-dinner slow dance.
Why stop at one day? The next morning, wake up bright and early. You won't regret it when the two of you are snuggled up watching the sunrise from floating high above the ground in a hot air balloon - the perfect end to a perfect Valentine's Day weekend.
If none of these options take your fancy, there's bound to be a Hot Travel Deal to suit you!
