There's no doubt about it, we Kiwis love to camp! But if it's been a while since you ditched your home comforts in favour of torches and blow-up mattresses, then this summer is the perfect time to dust off the old tent! New Zealand is the ultimate camping country with thousands of campgrounds to choose from, whether you're after a small, secluded campground or a huge holiday park with first-class facilities.
If the mere thought of a holiday without power makes you squeamish, fear not - most campgrounds throughout the country have fantastic facilities, including kitchens, bathrooms, TVs and even self-contained cabins. That said, there's nothing quite like getting back to basics and roughing it, with the things that are really important - your family and friends.
There are also over 250 camping sites under DOC control. All of these grounds are found in fantastic (and often secluded) settings, from the golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park to the Waipoua Forest in Northland. Some DOC sites have basic facilities, such as pit toilets and stream water, and others are fully serviced with ground management, flush toilets, showers and barbecues.
New Zealanders love camping so much that they rated it No. 9 of the 101 Must-Do's for Kiwis.
"This is something that every Kiwi kid should experience - leaving the electronics behind and creating toys from nature, or playing board games and cards when it's raining - it's a real memory for us all!" and "A great family time away. New Zealand has the best camping grounds in the world" were some of the blogs posted on our 101 Must-Do's for Kiwis website. But perhaps the most encapsulating blog was "To camp is to be KIWI!!!"
What better time to pack up the tent and sleeping bags and hit the road? But remember to book early as many popular camping grounds can be booked up months in advance.
