Why forgo a great night out just because it's cold outside? New Zealand definitely serves up great entertainment, from live acts to subtle jazz bars and theatre shows, no matter what the season. A great idea is to take a winter road trip and check out what's on in a different part of the country, so you can discover some of New Zealand's beautiful scenery while you're at it. Don't turn into a hermit this winter - here are a few of my suggestions for some fabulous winter entertainment that won't have you reaching for the gloves and scarf.

Now is the perfect time to do something that little bit different from what you would normally. Just because you've never been to see an orchestra, doesn't mean you won't thoroughly enjoy yourself. Art and culture are alive and well throughout New Zealand, so I recommend getting out there and experiencing it for yourself.

Firstly, you don't need to go all the way to the Broadway stages of New York and London to see an unforgettable theatre show. Professional theatre companies are scattered all around New Zealand and put on fantastic shows, from low-budget community plays and children's pantomimes to hilarious Kiwi comedies and extravagant musicals. What's more, it's a great chance to dress up, so don your best frocks and suits for a night out in style.

Indoor concerts are big during winter. Forget sliding around in the mud while trying to watch a great band, check them out in the comfort of a warm bar or indoor stadium. If you haven't been living under a rock, you would know that Kiwi music has never been better. Homegrown artists usually put on a great show in a relaxed environment, plus it won't break the bank - what better excuse for a warm night out?

Imagine sitting by a crackling log fire at a cosy restaurant or bar with a glass of wine in hand and listening to the sweet, seductive sounds of a jazz band or a piano player. Sounds good, doesn't it? Many of our country's cities have at least a few restaurants or bars that regularly host live musicians. This is a great idea for winter entertainment - great surrounds, great relaxing atmosphere, great music. Perfect!

On the other hand, for a bit of a less refined night out, check out the local pub, or a pub in a different city. There's always something going on that's guaranteed to warm up your evening, whether it's a pub quiz, a poker tournament, a rugby game on the big screen or live entertainment.
