I have the perfect solution for those winter days when outdoor activities are a no-go. Head to a museum or art gallery near you and prepare to be impressed! These days, museums are far from boring, having replaced their traditional style with an exciting, interactive character. Discover why we are the way we are, and have fun doing it!

Art is very much a part of the New Zealand culture. All of the metropolitan centres have exquisite public art galleries and exhibitions ready to be explored, as well as dealer galleries, showcasing both local and international talent.

Our main cities are home to spectacular museums, which conserve New Zealand's most precious treasures and historical artefacts, and small towns often house interesting museums detailing the history of the area. Each and every one is vastly different from the rest, and kids and adults alike will be entranced by the engaging short and long-term exhibitions and myriad interactive displays.

If you want to learn all about the history of New Zealand and its people and culture, museums are great places to start. They often house memorabilia from our country's early days, as well as fascinating displays and interactive activities. Specialist museums dedicated to a particular genre, such as military, sports, fashion, art and technology museums, are often quirky and exciting with captivating displays and exhibitions. Even those without the faintest interest in history will be entertained for hours!

A rainy day is the perfect excuse

For the lover of fine art, a rainy day is the perfect excuse to get acquainted with our country's fantastic art collections. Fine art galleries showcasing a broad range of traditional and contemporary works are dotted throughout the country; the main galleries are in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Look out for works by acclaimed New Zealand artists such as Colin McCahon, Rita Angus and Grahame Sydney. Most of these galleries also display a collection of general artwork.

Another option is to browse around dealers' galleries to admire the creative talents of established and up-and-coming painters, printers and photographers - you might even find something special to take home.
