Although there is something to be said for long, lazy summer days doing nothing in particular, there comes a time when you want to make the most of the gorgeous sunny days. I've put together a list of activities, in no particular order, that I think epitomise summer. The silly season just wouldn't be complete without them! Go on, give these a try this summer...

Road Trips

1. Road trip
Pick somewhere you haven't been before, book some accommodation, round up some mates and get on the road. From small beach towns to riverside villages or campgrounds in the bush, there are plenty of options to pick from in this beautiful country of ours.

2. Beach cricket
Get the family and friends together, head to a beach near you and get into some good old Kiwi cricket on the beach. It's loads of fun, plus you'll get your daily dose of exercise. If it all gets too hot, you can always run for the water and refresh yourself for another innings.

3. Summer events
Without a doubt, wherever you are in New Zealand, there will be a fantastic event happening near you this summer. Whether you like outdoor music concerts, food and wine festivals, art and cultural festivals or multi-day extravaganzas, there is an event catering for every taste this summer.

Barbecues

4. Fishing
Catch your night's dinner on a fishing trip. It's a simple pleasure, but a fishing trip with the blokes or your family is the perfect summer activity. Whether you're relaxing on a boat out at sea, standing knee-deep in a river or parking a deckchair on a wharf and dropping a line in, it's a great activity that everyone can enjoy.

5. Barbecues
Firing up the barbecue and having friends and family around for a few drinks in the backyard is a quintessential Kiwi summer evening. Fresh seafood, steaks and sausages are must-haves. What better way to finish off a day of fun in the sun?

Reading a book

Get wet

6. Reading a book
It may sound simple, but how many people do you know just don't have time to chill out and read a book during the year? It's the ultimate relaxant - pick a breezy spot, set up your deckchair and let yourself get lost in a fictional world...

7. Picnic at the park
Get your friends and family together and venture out to a beach, park, lake or a lookout for a picnic. It's a fun (and inexpensive) way to catch up with everyone and the kids will have a blast. Make sure you throw some Kiwi classics in the picnic basket: L&P, kiwifruit, chips 'n' dip, meat and bread - and don't forget the Wattie's tomato sauce!

8. Get wet
What better way to beat the sticky heat this summer than getting wet. There are so many places to swim in this beautiful country of ours. Mix it up by heading to your local pools or rivers as well as the good old beach, and if you're feeling adventurous, try a new activity such as surfing, snorkelling or taking a 'swimming with dolphins' trip.

9. Learn something new at a community class
Challenge yourself to learn something new this summer by enrolling in a community class. Get a group of mates together and enrich yourselves by learning a new craft, language, dance style or instrument. It'll be heaps of fun, and you'll enter the New Year with a rewarding new skill.

10. Make your own ice cream
Ice cream is a must-have summer treat that we can never get enough of. For a new twist this summer, don't buy it - make it yourself. All you need is rock salt, ice, milk, sugar, plastic bags and whatever goodies you want to throw in the mix. It's delicious, and the kids will love you for it!
