Whether it's one of your favourite or most dreaded days of the year, Valentine's Day is rolling around again on 14 February.
If the cliché of cards, chocolates and flowers makes you cringe then a mini-holiday is the perfect idea. Romance doesn't necessarily equal expensive, so don't despair if you're on a budget - the cost of a long weekend away can match that of a dozen red roses!

Wellington
Wellington is the ideal base for a romantic break, no matter what your budget. Think art galleries, a night out at the theatre, a stroll around the waterfront at sunset or a picnic at the beautiful Botanic Gardens. Plus, the renowned Martinborough wineries are only an hour-long train ride away.
Abel Tasman National Park
If your idea of romance is pure relaxation involving golden beaches, clear water and exquisite coastal scenery, then this is the place for you. Here you can laze away the days together on a secluded beach, paddle around the coast in a kayak (picnic lunch on board of course) and take a cruise on a yacht.
Rotorua
No matter what you're both into, Rotorua will deliver. If you're after a bit of relaxation, what could beat soaking in a thermal hot pool (many accommodation options have private spas) or being pampered with a mud treatment? Or, for a bit of fun, race each other down the luge or roll head over heels down a hill together in a Zorb.
Russell
They don't call it Romantic Russell for nothing! With abundant fresh local produce and seafood, this historic Northland town has more than its fair share of top-class restaurants and cafés. Check out the exquisitely restored historic buildings, art galleries and museum, relax on the beautiful Long Beach or take a cruise of the Bay of Islands.
Queenstown
They say Queenstown is a town fit for a queen, so it's one of the obvious choices for a Valentine's holiday. Resorts and luxury hotels are nestled in scenic spots, and day spas, tranquil boat cruises and scenic flights cater to those who want to take it easy. On the other hand, if you're the adventurous type, what better way to rekindle the romance than by bungy jumping together!
Hawke's Bay
Put simply, the Hawke's Bay encapsulates romance. Here you can take advantage of one of the country's leading food and wine regions, not to mention picturesque vineyards. You can also chill out on the beach, tee off at Cape Kidnappers, and visit Napier and Hastings with their beautiful art deco architecture and vibrant town centres.
Dunedin
Valentine's Day falls a few weeks before the chaos of students returning to their studies, so make the most it! The city's striking architecture will set the scene for a romantic weekend. Then there's the untouched Otago Peninsula, tours of the chocolate factory and the Taieri Gorge train journey, to name just a few. Oh, and don't forget to make her feel like a princess with a trip to Larnach Castle.
Waiheke Island
This slice of paradise, a 35-minute ferry ride from Auckland City, features many striking beaches and top-class wineries, which not only provide world-renowned wine but also gift dazzling views of Waiheke's diverse scenery. After indulging yourselves here, you can always head back towards the bright lights of Auckland City for some inner-city romance.
Hanmer Springs
This tranquil alpine village is known for its impressive thermal retreat and its spectacular surroundings. Imagine relaxing beside your loved one in a hot spa while looking out over towering mountains and picturesque alpine scenery... After you've rejuvenated, check out the charming restaurants and cafés or get active on a horse trek.
