A multitude of options are available - from rail systems and bus tours through to hiring rental cars and even buying your own vehicle.
Our rail system is reasonably efficient. You can travel the length of New Zealand by rail, however the system does not go to all of the countrys extremities. New Zealands roading, for the population size of the country, is outstanding. State highways criss-cross the country and secondary highways are of a good standard. All main and secondary routes are sealed, with a large number of minor routes upgraded annually from metal to seal.
Motorhomes, vehicles and even motorbikes are available for rental the length and breadth of the country. You must have a current New Zealand or international drivers licence in order to rent a vehicle. Please read all conditions of the contract carefully. There are a few roads in New Zealand where rental vehicles are not insured for driving Ninety Mile Beach being one example. Also remember, New Zealanders drive on the left-hand side of the road, which is the same as the British system. So if you are not used to our conditions, please be careful when starting your holiday.
