Situated in the southeast corner of the North Island, at the foot of the Tararua Ranges, the Wairarapa region is only an hour's drive from Wellington. Service towns in the region have their own distinct character, specialist shops and seasonal attractions; the food and wine make it a treasure trove for gourmets. Interesting tours are offered where you can see cheeses being made; chocolate makers, as well as honey, olive oil, beer, cider and wine producers. There are plenty of activities for the adventurous, including quad biking, heli-hovering, horse trekking, jet boating, sky diving, kayaking, white-water rafting, hot-air ballooning, tramping, mountain biking and caving. The town of Martinborough is a self-styled wine village with many vineyards within walking distance of the charming town square. Wairarapa's three forest parks provide a unique insight into New Zealand's native flora and fauna.
